The Flavour of Luxury in Today’s Homes

Luxury has always been a slippery word. Once upon a time, it was simple: luxury equalled wealth. A grand home with columns, chandeliers, and imported marble told the world exactly what you wanted it to know. But in Toronto’s neighbourhoods today—from Hoggs Hollow to Forest Hill—the equation is far subtler. Luxury is no longer about volume or shine; it’s about resonance.

Reserved Expressions

What we’re seeing in design and real estate is the shift from displayed opulence to quiet confidence. Buyers, especially the younger generations now entering their prime earning years, aren’t chasing the gilded look of Versailles. They’re searching for authenticity, sustainability, and homes that feel deeply personal. Gen Z and millennials together will soon account for the lion’s share of luxury purchases, and they bring with them a new definition of what makes a home extraordinary.

For them, luxury isn’t necessarily a $10 million estate. It might be a thoughtfully renovated mid-century home that celebrates original craftsmanship, or a “hidden gem” tucked into a leafy ravine where the loudest sound is birdsong. This is the flavour of today’s luxury: not shouting, but whispering. It’s walnut millwork done perfectly rather than a wall of glossy lacquer; a sculptural staircase that’s as much art as architecture; natural stone that feels cool underfoot on a hot August afternoon.

Life & Design Harmonized

The flavour of luxury is also about lifestyle alignment. In neighbourhoods like Rosedale and Lawrence Park, buyers are drawn not just to square footage, but to walkability, access to green space, and interiors that harmonize with their surroundings. A stone terrace shaded by old maples, a discreetly modernized kitchen that hides its technology behind panelled doors, a sense of sanctuary that tells its own story—that’s where the real value lies.

And crucially, people are not just buying houses, they’re buying life lived within them. I’ve seen immaculate new builds languish on the market, because empty spaces — no matter how glossy the finishes — don’t carry the same integrity as a home that has been thoughtfully inhabited.

Personalization & Storytelling

Buyers are drawn to evidence of life: the curated eclecticism of furniture and art collected over time, the patina of gardens that have been nurtured season after season, the maturity of stonework terraces and tree canopies that no quick-build deck can replicate. While too much personalization can indeed overwhelm, the right amount adds soul. It’s another expression of quiet luxury: authentic, not ostentatious. For selling, this balance can be managed—paring back a little here, staging lightly there—but the effect of a house that feels lived in is undeniable.

The most telling trend? Discretion. “Quiet luxury” is the new banner, though in truth it’s less trend than evolution. It’s about cultivated restraint: homes that don’t need to scream their affluence because their integrity speaks for itself. These are spaces designed with artistry, not algorithms—where creativity, tactility, and craft combine to make something timeless.

As I walk through homes with clients, I see this shift play out in real time. Some still gravitate to the obvious statement pieces, but more and more, discerning buyers pause when they encounter a detail done just right: a dovetail joint in custom cabinetry, the perfect scale of a window framing a ravine view, the warmth of oak under bare feet. Luxury today is felt rather than flaunted.

And perhaps that’s the most hopeful note of all: in an age of noise and abundance, the ultimate luxury is understatement — and the kind that deepens with time.
